University Institute of Technology (UIT), Alappuzha Regional Centre, a higher education Institution, directly managed by Kerala University has been started its voyage of unmatched professionalism and educational excellence with undisputed institutional quality since 25th September 1995. Shri. G Sudhakaran, Hon’ble Minister of Public Works Department and Registration, Govt. of Kerala, who was the syndicate member of Kerala University during 1995 executed the inauguration of this Regional Centre as per the decision taken by the syndicate of University of Kerala in 1995 along with other UIT Centres of Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara, Kollam and Adoor. The College becomes a functionary Academic Institution from the first month itself with an aim for the educational upsurge of all spheres of society. Presently the college offers four UG Courses (B.Sc Computer Science, B.Com Computer Application, B.Com Co-operation, BBA) and two PG Courses (M.Sc Computer Science and M.Com Finance)
UIT, Alappuzha was first started in the premises of Pazhaveedu H.S.S Thiruvampady in a building which was received as royalty. In the beginning, the college has a sanctioned intake of 114 students- 67in BBA and 47 in B.Sc Computer Science along with 10 Teaching and 5 Non-teaching staff. The founder Principal of the College was Sri. Jose K Thayyil (1995-99) followed by Prof. A Rajappan Nair(1999-2009), Dr. Nanadakumar Damodara Prasad (2009-2013), Prof. John M George (2013-18). Dr.D Radhakrishana Pillai is currently leading the way of successful cruise of the college for the last one year.
The Staff and Students of UIT, Alappzuha are extremely thankful to the late Prof. A Rajappan Nair, the former Principal who made a marvelous effort in enhancing the infrastructural development of the college. During 1997 the college was shifted from Thiruvampady HSS to own building which is situated in Mohammadan’s School campus. Subsequently a new building block was constructed with the financial assistance of Kerala University as well as the financial support of the PTA of the college. The college was selected by Kerala University as a venue for conducting the Inter University Youth Festival and the Kerala University Youth Festival in 2015.
B Com with Computer Application was started during 2000-01 academic year with an intake of 50 students. In 2001, the college expanded its territory with the completion of a new building block and was inaugurated by the then MP Shri. V M Sudheeran. Subsequently MSc Computer Science programme was started during the academic year 2005.
UIT, Alappuzha was a centre for the conduct of Distance education courses of Kerala University from 2005 onwards. Our college has a full-fledged Library consisting of about 5000 Books on Management, Commerce, Computer Science and other scientific studies along with a periodical section. Besides, there are two well-equipped Computer Labs for UG and PG students along with an Electronics Lab.
The infrastructural facilities of the college got further impetus with the inauguration of a new Seminar Block during April 2018. The Block consists of a large Seminar Hall along with four adjacent class rooms. The Block was constructed utilizing Rs.65 Lakh from the MLA fund of the Hon’ble PWD minister of Kerala Sri.G Sudhakaran.
Subsequently with the strenuous efforts of the present principal Dr. D Radhakrishna Pillai, further improvement of the infrastructural facilities of the college is still going on with the joint funding of Kerala University and Alappuzha Muncipality.
The College is going to celebrate the Silver Jubilee year during 2020-21. Spanning a period of 25 years, UIT Alappuzha becomes a renowned professional college and an institution with paramount significance among career aspirants. Attracting the students of various walks of life, 23 batches of students have already been graduated from this College with commendable academic excellence. In this context, we mark the name of Kumari. Vineetha (BSc CS 1998 Batch) who brought University Rank to the College which inspired other students in subsequent year to achieve 100 percent results including Ranks to the College in University Examinations. It is our pride to state that one of our former students, Smt.Bincy, who got the First Rank in MSc Computer Science of Kerala University in 2009, is presently a faculty in Computer Science of this College.
The PTA of our College played a vital role in creating a close bond between the parents and teachers and to guide the students in the right way. The administration of the PTA is presently headed by a panel of 17 members; 8 members from the Teaching Category and 8 from the parents and the Principal.
Our students are talented in extra-curricular activities as well. To enhance their Artistic and Athletic skills, various programmes are organized throughout the years. Annual sports meet and Arts Day were conducted every year in order to provide opportunity to the students to present their talents in the respective events. The college Cricket Team and basket Ball Team formed during 2019 participated at University Sports meet as well as inter UIT Competitions and won medals
To channelize the energy of our students in creative direction, a strong NSS Unit with 50 volunteers is functioning in the College. It is a great honour that UIT, Alappuzha is the first UIT which has been allotted with a NSS Unit by the year 2013. The students are actively participating in various caring activities like Blood donation camp in the College, cleaning the college campus, Palliative care activities, distribution of study kits, food and medicine distribution for the patients and afforestation activities. Within a period of seven years of its activities, the NSS unit of UIT Alappuzha was able to receive the appreciation and acclaim of the entire Society in Alappuzha. This was specifically so during the last year’s flood in which our college was one of the Relief Camps in Alappuzha and the subsequent rehabilitation activities. During 2017 and2018, the NSS unit of our college with the participation of Alappuzha Municipality conducted the marriage of Ten inmates of the Alappuzha Orphanage. Besides the NSS unit, several other clubs like Woman’s Club, Music Club, Placement Cell etc; are also functioning effectively.
The NAAC Team which visited Kerala University during 2015 for accreditation purpose also visited UIT, Alappuzha which added another golden feather to the glorified crown of our College. The NAAC Team which visited our College was extremely satisfied with the full- fledged functioning of our College and the dedication of the Teaching and Office Staff to improve the quality of the teaching and Learning of the Institute. The NAAC Team was impressed with our success rate and standard of our students. We are very proud to become a part of the accreditation process of the Mother University of Kerala, viz; Kerala University by NAAC Team and contributed enough for the achievement of ‘A’ Grade to Kerala University from NAAC.
Career guidance and Placement are two important features of our college. Every year, orientation classes were conducted to explore the employment opportunities available in various sectors of our economy and to equip our students to exploit such opportunities. Accordingly five students of B.Sc Computer Science final year (2016-19 Batch) secured job appointments at Infosys and TCS through Campus recruitment during April 2019.
The general discipline of this Institute is very conducive for learning and research. No academic hour is lost due to strikes or other unrests. Hence the general public is always enthusiastic to get admission for their children at UIT Alappuzha. Such discipline is maintained through the whole hearted support of the entire staff, students and PTA.
2020-21 is the Silver Jubilee year of UIT Alappuzha. Over the last 25 years of its functioning, it has produced several outstanding personalities in various walks of life. We are in the final stage of formation of the College Alumni Association. We hope to celebrate the Silver jubilee of the college in a grand manner through the involvement of all stakeholders of this Institute during the next academic year.
